List of Important Days in January 2025

January, the first month of the year in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars, spans 31 days. Its inaugural day, New Year’s Day, is widely celebrated. In the Northern Hemisphere, January is typically the coldest month and the second month of winter. Conversely, in the Southern Hemisphere, it is the warmest month and the second month of summer, making it the seasonal counterpart of July in the North.

Ancient Roman traditions in January included festivals such as Cervula and Juvenalia on January 1, the Agonalia on January 9, and Carmentalia on January 11. However, these dates align with the old Roman calendar, not the modern Gregorian system. The month’s name, “January” (Latin: *Ianuarius*), honors Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions.

The original Roman calendar, traditionally attributed to Romulus, consisted of ten months and excluded the winter period. Around 713 BC, King Numa Pompilius, Romulus’s semi-legendary successor, introduced January and February to align the calendar with the lunar year of 354 days. While March initially served as the first month, January became the calendar year’s starting point either during Numa’s reign or under the Decemvirs around 450 BC, as Roman accounts vary. However, the official Roman calendar year began with the entry of consuls into office, which shifted from March 15 to January 1 in 153 BC.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Christian feast days like March 25 (the Feast of the Annunciation) and December 25 were commonly used to mark the New Year. Nevertheless, medieval calendars adhered to the Roman layout of 12 months, starting with January. By the 16th century, January 1 was reinstated across Europe as the official New Year’s Day, sometimes referred to as “Circumcision Style” because it coincided with the Feast of the Circumcision, the seventh day after December 25.

Historically, January had various names. It was originally called *Ianuarius* by the Romans, while the Saxons referred to it as *Wulf-monath* (“wolf month”), and Charlemagne named it *Wintarmanoth* (“winter month”). In Slovene tradition, January is known as *prosinec*, linked to millet bread and requests, first documented in 1466 in the Škofja Loka manuscript.

According to historian Theodor Mommsen, January 1 became the year’s starting point in 153 BC (600 AUC in the Roman calendar) during the Lusitanian War. A Lusitanian chief named Punicus invaded Roman territories, defeating two governors and their armies. To expedite military response, the Romans advanced the consular term by two and a half months, establishing January 1 as the beginning of the year.
